...And It's Place in Education

Introduction

Social networking sites are becoming increasingly popular with students, especially the site called Facebook. To put it bluntly, Facebook has become a cultural phenomenon. In less than five years of its existence it has become the most trafficked social media site in the world and has expanded from the use of a single university (Harvard), to the use of over 110 million active users (Facebook, 2008). This rapid expansion has caught the attention of not only students and young people, but of parents and teachers as well. The idea that parents and teachers can simply block the use of these social networking sites is becoming no longer relevant. What needs to happen is for teachers and parents to meet students on their “turf”, within the social networking sites. There are many educational uses for these social networking sites, especially Facebook. As educators it is important to explore these technologies and use them when possible.
